FORAGING ADVENTURES AT FISCHER’S

FORAGING AT FISCHER’S
Fischer’s is excited to announce its partnership with Foraging Forages, acclaimed by The Guardian as one of the top 10 foraging courses in the UK, to present an exclusive foraging course for 2024. Guests are invited to spend a splendid morning with Fischer’s forager, Sam, exploring the natural bounty of the Peak District, culminating in a delightful lunch at Baslow Hall.

INTRODUCING THE FORAGER
Sam has harboured a deep-rooted passion for foraging, the wonders of nature, and the quest for freely available food since childhood, a journey that began on their Nana’s farm. There, Sam’s earliest memories include picking blackberries from hedgerows, assisting in jam-making, and crafting “wild soup” from water, leaves, and flowers. This fascination with the natural world grew stronger with age, particularly with mushrooms, which became an obsession after purchasing a mushroom book for a GCSE art project.

The tradition of fruit gathering during the late summer and autumn became a part of Sam’s life, especially memorable when, as a new parent, Sam ventured out with their first child, collecting wild apples, plums, and pears, along with baskets brimming with blackberries and raspberries. Initially, Sam’s culinary creations were simple—infused alcohols, jams, and pies. A turning point came in 2012 when Sam’s spouse gifted them a foraging course, igniting a never-ending passion for wild foods.

By 2017, Sam had begun hosting foraging events, turning a lifelong passion into a profession. Sharing knowledge about plants, mushrooms, and nature became not just a job but a calling. With a decade of experience as a secondary school teacher, Sam brought their educational skills to the foraging world, offering a wide array of courses ranging from beginner lessons to advanced culinary workshops, wild beverage crafting, and specialised forays into various ecosystems.

Sam finds the greatest joy in exploring, cooking, learning new things, and photography.

THE FORAGING EXPERIENCE
The experience begins at 9:00 am at a dedicated meeting point, where participants are greeted with wild tea and homemade biscuits. After getting acquainted, the group delves into the forager’s mindset and embarks on an expedition to uncover Derbyshire’s rich tapestry of wild edibles.

Participants return to Fischer’s at 1:00 pm to enjoy a two-course lunch prepared by Head Chef Adam Thackery and served by the Fischer’s team. The meal, inspired by the day’s foraging discoveries, showcases the best of local, seasonal, and freshly foraged ingredients. The day concludes with a tour of Fischer’s prolific kitchen garden.
