Often referred to as ‘The seaside town without the sea’, it’s a lively place with a wide range of independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, all set in a beautiful limestone gorge. The River Derwent provides shady walks to the various parks dotted along the river, where you can enjoy a boating lake and beautifully manicured gardens. Every September to October the town is awash with colour and light during the spectacular Matlock Illuminations, when the riverside and cliff tops are decorated and parades of illuminated boats light up the river.
There so much to see and do a little further afield too. Admire this amazing area from the sky in the cable cars at The Heights of Abraham, enjoy the thrills at Gulliver’s Kingdom Theme Park, or embark on a historic journey at Crich Tramway Village.
