The southern half of the Peak District is a stunning area, typified by rolling hills and lush valleys, criss-crossed by ancient dry stone walls. The countryside is perfect for walking and cycling, with hundreds of miles of footpaths and trails to enjoy.
The wonderful Tissington Trail is a former railway line that runs for 13 miles from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay, passing through stunning landscapes and a number of beautiful villages. It’s a great traffic-free trail that’s wonderful for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. It also passes very close to Dovedale, the picturesque limestone ravine with its famous stepping stones.
The lovely town of Ashbourne is known as the Gateway to the Peak District, and it’s the perfect base from which to explore the spectacular surrounding countryside. The town is a wonderful place to spend the day, with beautiful architecture, plenty of interesting shops to browse around, as well as a great collection of cafes and pubs to refresh visitors afterwards. The Memorial Garden on the edge of the town, complete with stream and duck pond, is the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle or enjoy a picnic.
Matlock and its close neighbour Matlock Bath are both beautiful towns with a wealth of sights and attractions to keep the whole family entertained. Surrounded by wooded hillsides and set on the River Derwent, Matlock is a lovely town to explore. It has plenty of independent, quirky shops, as well as a wide choice of cafés, pubs and restaurants. At its centre is the extensive Hall Leys Park, which has river walks, flower gardens, a small boating lake, tennis courts, and a great children’s play area.
Matlock Bath has been a tourist destination since the late 17th Century, when the healing properties of its warm spa waters were first discovered. It occupies a beautiful position in a limestone gorge and boasts attractive riverside gardens and steep wooded hillsides. The town is still a wonderful place to visit, with a long street of shops, cafes, amusement arcades and places of interest, including an aquarium and photographic museum. The riverside walks are great for peaceful, shady strolls, and there is a good children’s playground area to keep younger visitors amused.
The bustling market town of Leek is situated on the south-western edge of the Peak District, and is known locally as The Queen of the Moorlands. It has loads to offer the visitor, with plenty of independents shops and markets, plus it’s set in the most stunning landscape of the Staffordshire Peak District, on the banks of the River Churnet.
