The southern half of the Peak District is a stunning area, typified by rolling hills and lush valleys, criss-crossed by ancient dry stone walls. The countryside is perfect for walking and cycling, with hundreds of miles of footpaths and trails to enjoy.
The wonderful Tissington Trail is a former railway line that runs for 13 miles from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay, passing through stunning landscapes and a number of beautiful villages. It’s a great traffic-free trail that’s wonderful for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. It also passes very close to Dovedale, the picturesque limestone ravine with its famous stepping stones.
The lovely town of Ashbourne is known as the Gateway to the Peak District, and it’s the perfect base from which to explore the spectacular surrounding countryside. The town is a wonderful place to spend the day, with beautiful architecture, plenty of interesting shops to browse around, as well as a great collection of cafes and pubs to refresh visitors afterwards. The Memorial Garden on the edge of the town, complete with stream and duck pond, is the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle or enjoy a picnic.
Matlock and its close neighbour Matlock Bath are both beautiful towns with a wealth of sights and attractions to keep the whole family entertained. Surrounded by wooded hillsides and set on the River Derwent, Matlock is a lovely town to explore. It has plenty of independent, quirky shops, as well as a wide choice of cafés, pubs and restaurants. At its centre is the extensive Hall Leys Park, which has river walks, flower gardens, a small boating lake, tennis courts, and a great children’s play area.
Matlock Bath has been a tourist destination since the late 17th Century, when the healing properties of its warm spa waters were first discovered. It occupies a beautiful position in a limestone gorge and boasts attractive riverside gardens and steep wooded hillsides. The town is still a wonderful place to visit, with a long street of shops, cafes, amusement arcades and places of interest, including an aquarium and photographic museum. The riverside walks are great for peaceful, shady strolls, and there is a good children’s playground area to keep younger visitors amused.
The bustling market town of Leek is situated on the south-western edge of the Peak District, and is known locally as The Queen of the Moorlands. It has loads to offer the visitor, with plenty of independents shops and markets, plus it’s set in the most stunning landscape of the Staffordshire Peak District, on the banks of the River Churnet.

If you are planning a visit to Derbyshire and the Peak District and need large group accommodation at the centre of the many attractions around here, then Offcote Grange Cottage Holidays can offer you large, self-catering, luxury group accommodation at the very heart of this wonderful county. Specialising in large groups and hen parties we are now working with a company offering a new experience for our visitors. You can now enjoy a visit to Derbyshire’s first and only whisky and gin distillery ‘White Peak Distillery’. Based in the village of Ambergate, which is in the centre of Derbyshire, it is part of the regeneration of the aged ‘Johnsons Wireworks’ buildings, sitting alongside the beautiful river Derwent which flows down the UNESCO Derwent Valley World Heritage trail. This small, family firm focuses on producing small batches of spirits and offering a unique visitor experience. Take the distillery tour and experience the smells, tastes and atmosphere of a working distillery. You will visit the still house and cask stores before finally moving on to the tasting rooms for samples of Shining Cliff gins. Adults and children are welcome on regular tours, and for those larger groups wanting a fun experience - such as hen and stag dos - special group parties can be arranged. www.whitepeakdistillery.co.uk...
