A Visit to Treak Cliff Cavern
The beautiful Treak Cliff Cavern, located in the village of Castleton in Derbyshire, offers a great Peak District day out. It’s the home of Britain’s rarest mineral, Blue John stone, and Castleton is the only place in the world where it can be found! It has an incredibly impressive collection of Blue John stone, so much so that it’s designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of the richness of its deposits; 500kgs are still mined each year from the cave.
Combine your trip here with a walk into the very pretty village of Castleton, or up in the other direction onto Mam Tor.
At Treak Cliff Cavern you can explore the stunning Peak District underground landscape, with natural caverns and ancient lead mining caves, walking through awe-inspiring chambers lined with Blue John stone formations, fossils, stalactites and stalagmites.
And afterwards you can relax and enjoy the most incredible views above ground too, overlooking the whole of the Hope Valley at the Café on the Cliff.
The Gift Shop on site sells a great selection of gems and souvenirs, including Blue John stone items of jewellery and ornaments, and you can learn more about the history of Treak Cliff in the fascinating Museum.
And as a perfect memento of your trip, you can even choose and polish your very own piece of Blue John stone to take away with you!
