Exploring around 19 The Village

19 The Village is tucked away in Holme, close to Holmbridge and Holmfirth, putting you at the northern end of the Peak District in a landscape that feels noticeably different from the limestone villages and dales further south. This is Pennine country, characterised by reservoirs, open moorland, steep hills and far-reaching views.

For walkers and cyclists, one of the great attractions of staying here is having the countryside of the Holme Valley immediately around you. Holme Moss rises above the area and is particularly well known among cyclists for its challenging climb, while the surrounding moors provide plenty of opportunities to get out into a wilder landscape.

Head west from Holme and the scenery opens towards the Woodhead and Torside reservoirs. This northern stretch of the Peak District has a wonderfully spacious feel, with reservoirs sitting beneath broad sweeps of moorland and routes extending towards the Longdendale Valley. The Woodhead Pass also provides a dramatic route across the Pennines and towards the central Peak District.

In the other direction, make time for Holmfirth. Famous as the filming location for Last of the Summer Wine, the town has much more to offer than its television connections, with characteristic stone buildings, independent businesses, cafés and a strong programme of events throughout the year.

Staying at 19 The Village therefore gives you an opportunity to discover a part of the Peak District that can sometimes be overlooked by visitors heading immediately for Bakewell, Castleton or the Hope Valley. Spend a day exploring the Holme Valley and its moorland landscapes, visit Holmfirth, then venture further into the National Park if you're staying for longer.

It's an excellent location for seeing how varied the Peak District can be, with the Yorkshire Pennine landscape providing a distinctive character all of its own.
