A Visit to Bradfield
If you’ve never spent a day in and around beautiful Bradfield, you’ve really missed a trick! Only 7 miles out of Sheffield but surrounded by the most wonderfully wild moorland countryside, it straddles the border of the Peak District National Park in Yorkshire. It’s the largest civil parish in England and it’s made up of two villages: High Bradfield, which is situated on the hillside, and Low Bradfield, which sits down in the valley alongside the River Loxley.

High Bradfield is a historic place, dominated by the beautiful Grade I listed church of St Nicholas, built in the 1480s. There are other notable buildings to admire, including the original parish workhouse dating from the 1750s. And don’t miss a pint or a meal outside at The Old Horns Inn – with arguably the best views from any beer garden in the Peak District!

Down in the valley, Low Bradfield is also an idyllic place for a wander, with a beautiful village cricket ground and park. The village suffered terribly in the Great Sheffield Flood of March 1864, when Dale Dike Reservoir burst its dam wall and released more than 700 million gallons of water into the Loxley Valley, washing away countless buildings and sadly killing more than 250 people.

Bradfield is surrounded by four beautiful reservoirs – Agden, Damflask, Dale Dike and Strines – and the surrounding countryside is perfect for a walk after your time exploring the village.
And if you need any more incentive to visit, Bradfield is also the home of the Bradfield Brewery, renowned locally for its fabulous ‘Farmers’ ales!
