A Visit to the beautiful Peak District village of Monyash
Visit Monyash, a picturesque village in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales, where pretty stone cottages, a tranquil village green, and the historic Fere Mere pond create the perfect countryside escape. Located at the head of the beautiful Lathkill Dale, this ancient settlement—mentioned in the Domesday Book as “Maneis”—takes its name from the many waters that flow beneath it, thanks to a unique band of clay deposited during the last Ice Age. Today, Monyash offers a peaceful retreat with a thriving community spirit and stunning views over rolling green hills.
The lovely village of Monyash in the Derbyshire Peak District is gorgeous, a place to stop for a while and enjoy the village life, with pretty stone cottages lining quiet lanes and a country inn overlooking a village green.
It is located in the White Peak at the head of the beautiful Lathkill Dale, surrounded by rolling green fields and gentle hills, this is the Derbyshire Dales at its finest.
Monyash History
The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ‘Maneis’. The name comes from the Old English words ‘Mane’ and ‘Eas’, meaning many waters. The name arose because of the unusual band of clay running beneath the village, deposited during the last Ice Age. This clay bed allows pools of water to collect in the area, uncommon in a limestone region.
The villagers used this to their advantage, creating ponds and wells to allow access to fresh water all year round. In the past the village had no less than five ponds and twenty wells. One such pond, Fere Mere, still remains in the centre, and is a picturesque feature.
Marvellous Monyash Today
Monyash today is a smaller, more peaceful settlement, but with a thriving community spirit. The economy is now based largely on farming.

How do I get there?
From Bakewell take the B5055 for approximately 5 miles to arrive at the village, from Buxton or Ashbourne approach via the A515 and take the B5055 signed for Monyash.
