Exploring around 2 Lumford House
2 Lumford House has one of those locations that makes exploring the Peak District particularly easy. Set beside the River Wye on the edge of Bakewell, the cottage feels peaceful and tucked away, yet the centre of this much-loved market town is only around a 5 to 10 minute walk away.
That means you can enjoy Bakewell without having to plan every visit around parking or driving. Wander into town for its independent shops, cafés and historic streets, spend some time beside the river, or simply explore some of the quieter lanes away from the busiest parts of the centre. Bakewell also makes an excellent base because so many different parts of the Peak District are accessible from here.
There are plenty of opportunities to leave the car behind altogether. Footpaths lead out from the area towards Ashford-in-the-Water, a beautiful limestone village beside the River Wye, while the traffic-free Monsal Trail opens up miles of easy walking and cycling through some wonderful White Peak scenery.
For a longer day, the surrounding network of paths creates opportunities to explore much further afield. Haddon Hall lies close to Bakewell, while Chatsworth and its surrounding estate provide another very different day out. The White Peak villages and limestone dales around Bakewell also mean there is always another walk or place to discover without travelling far.
One of the real pleasures of staying here is being able to choose the pace of the day. You can head out early for a substantial walk, cycle the Monsal Trail, spend a few hours exploring Bakewell, or simply return to the quieter riverside setting of Lumford afterwards.
For visitors wanting a central Peak District base without feeling isolated from a town, 2 Lumford House offers a particularly useful combination. Bakewell is almost on the doorstep, while some of the best-known landscapes, villages, walking routes and historic estates of the White Peak spread out around you.
