About The George

The George

Transformed in 2021 into a popular gastro pub, and then recently renovated during an 8 month closure in the last few months due to the whole ground floor being flooded in Storm Babet. The George is back and will continue to take pride of place as one of Hathersage’s popular destination food and drinks venues! Located in the popular Peak District village of Hathersage, in the heart of the beautiful Hope Valley, this 500 year old historic building has been returned to the beautiful coaching inn that it once was, but with a a whole new vibe and buzz about it, including a hidden courtyard…

Exploring around The George

The George puts you right in the centre of Hathersage, one of the most useful villages in the Hope Valley for combining food, accommodation and a day exploring the surrounding Peak District. There is plenty within walking distance, and some of the area's most recognisable gritstone scenery rises above the village.

For walkers, the obvious landmark is Stanage Edge. Stretching above Hathersage, the edge is one of the defining landscapes of the Dark Peak and has long attracted walkers and climbers. Our Hathersage and Stanage Edge Walk provides a six-mile circular route from the village, while there are plenty of shorter options if you simply want to explore locally.

Hathersage itself deserves some time too. Paths lead out towards the River Derwent and neighbouring Grindleford, while shorter village walks provide an alternative to heading straight for the high ground. Our two-mile Hathersage Fairy Woods walk is a good example of how much countryside can be enjoyed without committing to a full day on the hills.

The village railway station is another advantage. Services along the Hope Valley line make it possible to explore places such as Grindleford, Hope and Edale without taking the car, and create plenty of possibilities for linear walks.

The George is also part of Longbow Venues, linking it with a collection of characterful places to eat, drink and stay across the area. Here in Hathersage, however, the real strength is location. You can step outside and be immediately connected with the village, the Hope Valley and some of the finest walking country in the eastern Peak District.
