Exploring around The Maynard
The Maynard occupies a particularly good position for exploring the eastern side of the Hope Valley, with some of the Peak District's best-loved woodland, moorland and gritstone scenery close by. Set in Grindleford, it works equally well as somewhere to stop for food or as a base for a longer stay.
One of the great advantages of this location is the variety of countryside within easy reach. Padley Gorge provides a complete change of atmosphere beneath its ancient trees, while the open landscapes of the National Trust's Longshaw Estate are close by. Head higher and the gritstone country around Froggatt Edge and Curbar Edge opens up extensive views across the surrounding landscape.
There are excellent possibilities for exploring without relying entirely on the car too. Grindleford has its own railway station on the Hope Valley line, linking the village with Hathersage, Hope and Edale in one direction and Sheffield in the other. Our Hathersage via Stanage Edge and Higger Tor walk also passes The Maynard, demonstrating just how naturally Grindleford connects into the wider network of paths through the Hope Valley.
For a change from walking, Chatsworth is within easy reach, while Bakewell makes an excellent destination for a few hours exploring independent shops, historic streets and the River Wye.
The Maynard is part of Longbow Venues, a collection of distinctive places to eat, drink and stay across the Peak District and surrounding area. Its Grindleford setting gives this particular Longbow venue a strong connection with the landscape, making it especially well placed for combining good food or an overnight stay with a proper day exploring the Peak District.
