Exploring around The Peacock at Owler Bar
The Peacock at Owler Bar sits on the eastern side of the Peak District, where Sheffield gives way remarkably quickly to open moorland, woodland and the gritstone landscapes of north-east Derbyshire. Its position makes it particularly useful for visitors approaching the Peak District from Sheffield, as well as anyone exploring the quieter countryside around Owler Bar.
Close by, Blacka Moor Nature Reserve offers a very different experience from the busy honeypot villages further west. Its mixture of woodland, heath and open moorland provides plenty of opportunities for a quieter walk, while Gillfield Wood adds another local area to explore.
A little further into the Peak District, the National Trust's Longshaw Estate provides an excellent introduction to the landscape around the eastern Hope Valley. From here the countryside opens towards Padley Gorge, Hathersage and the gritstone edges, giving you plenty of scope to turn a visit to The Peacock into part of a much longer day outdoors.
Walkers looking for something more substantial are also well placed for the edges. Our Peak District walking guide includes routes around Stanage, Hathersage and the surrounding gritstone country, providing plenty of ideas if you want to explore further west.
The Peacock at Owler Bar is part of Longbow Venues, a collection of pubs, restaurants and places to stay across the Peak District area. What makes this venue distinctive within the group is its position on the Sheffield side of the National Park, making it a convenient stopping point between city and countryside, with genuinely rewarding places to explore close by.
