The White Peak Walk
Day one SK041785 Take Ridge Lane up south-west to its top, then paths south of west over to Errwood Reservoir dam. Cross the dam and take a path on the right, then a roadside path to the road top. Follow the ridge path to Shining Tor.
SJ994737 Take the path down south-east to an unnamed top (Stake Side, about 530m). Follow track then fence south to the road near the Cat and Fiddle Inn. Opposite the inn, a track, then open moor, leads south to Whetstone Ridge.
SK001709 Follow Cumberland Brook down south-west to the road at the valley floor. Pass Clough House farm, cross a second lane, and take a path down-valley above woods. After Banktop, this turns directly uphill to Shutlingsloe summit. It is rocky, but there’s a bivvy hollow down to the north.
Day two SJ976695 Head north to col, then round right, for a gentler way to rejoin the upward path down to Banktop driveway. Follow this to Wildboarclough. Cross the lane, to take a footpath south to the A54. Take the track above Heild End Farm to a minor road. Cross and keep downhill to a footbridge over River Dane below Gradbach YHA.
SJ993660 Cross, and turn downstream to cross a footbridge over Black Brook. Keep uphill, west, through woodland. A tor crag projects from the woods. Here turn left for 300m, then go up the narrow chasm of Lud’s Church. Above, a concessionary path leads up to the ridgeline. Head south-east to the road corner at Roach End, take the path opposite to the Roaches trig.
SK000638 Return to Roach End. Follow the bridleway opposite, bending right (east) down to Black Brook, and upstream to Blackbank. Follow the driveway up, then a road north towards Flash. After 1.5km, cross to a junction to paths leading to a lane west of Flash. Turn up right to the village.
SK025671 Head through the village to the A53 and turn left for 50m, for a footpath on the left leading up towards TV masts on Oliver Hill. Head down north-west to a lane. Turn right and then fork left for 300m. At Hilltop, turn left up a tarred track, forking right up gravel track to a gate onto access land and the ridge to Axe Edge.
SK032693 Descend north, cross a road, and follow a small path up to the trig (551m) on Axe Edge Moor. Head down west to a col, turn roughly north to cross the A54 and follow paths to Burbage Edge.
SK029732 Continue north, using an old railbed down left of the ridge, then up to cross the A5004 at the top of Goyts Lane. Follow the moorland crest north-east, then back north west along a wall to the unnamed point above Round the Bend (SK038760). Continue NE across moorland to the trig point of Black Edge.
SK062770 Follow the moorland edge to earthworks at Castle Naze. A path leads down to the lane below. Cross to a green lane for a footpath running down to the railway, and into Combs.
