Her on a Hill – Women’s Walking Adventures in the Heart of the Peak District

At the heart of Her on a Hill lies a simple but powerful mission — to inspire women to step outside, breathe deeply, and reconnect with the natural world. Founded in 2019, this women’s walking company was created to encourage more women to explore the countryside, discover new landscapes, and enjoy the many physical and mental health benefits that come from time spent outdoors.

But Her on a Hill is about far more than just walking. It is about the community, confidence, and connection – with nature, with others, and with yourself. Whether you are a seasoned hiker or lacing up your boots for the very first time, every experience is designed to be welcoming, nurturing, and empowering.

An Experience Designed for Women

What makes Her on a Hill truly special is its focus on creating a supportive and inclusive environment where women can walk, learn, and grow together. The groups are small and friendly, allowing everyone to feel part of the experience and ensuring that no one is ever left behind.

Walks are guided by experienced leaders who are passionate about the outdoors and skilled at making everyone feel at ease. They tailor each day to suit the group’s pace and energy, offering encouragement, local knowledge, and plenty of good humour along the way.

The Peak Pilgrimage covers around 35 miles over 3.5 days, with daily distances ranging from 6 to 11 miles. Each evening, you’ll return to the welcoming comfort of Hartington Hall Youth Hostel, a beautiful 17th-century manor house full of character and charm. The Peak Pilgrimage – A Journey Through the Heart of the Peaks

One of Her on a Hills most inspiring adventures is the Peak Pilgrimage, a long-distance walking route that threads together some of the most beautiful and historic villages in the Peak District National Park. This guided journey is more than just a walk — it’s an experience steeped in history, scenery, and shared discovery.

The route begins in the charming village of Ilam, a place of pilgrimage for over a thousand years. From here, the path winds through Dovedale, one of the most iconic valleys in the Peaks, famous for its limestone cliffs and picturesque stepping stones. The group then continues north to Alstonefield and on to Hartington, a quintessential Peak District village that serves as your home base for the trip.

Over the following days, the trail unfolds like a living storybook. You’ll wander through Lathkill Dale, one of the region’s most breathtaking limestone valleys; explore Bakewell, home of the famous pudding; and stroll through Edensor, a unique village set within the Chatsworth Estate. The journey continues through Chatsworth Park, following the River Derwent before culminating in Eyam, known as the “plague village” — a place of remarkable history and resilience.

Every step reveals a new layer of the Peak District’s character — from rolling hills and tranquil rivers to timeless stone villages and sweeping moorlands. It’s a route that captures both the beauty and the spirit of this treasured national park.
