Step Inside: A Hub of Innovation and History

Upon entering Castleton Visitor Centre, you are immediately greeted by a blend of cutting-edge technology and rich local heritage. A major highlight is the exciting digital interpretation displays, including a groundbreaking interactive wall – the first time such innovative technology has been deployed by a UK national park. This offers a dynamic and engaging way to understand the area’s significance.

Complementing this modern approach is a dedicated space for the Castleton Historical Society’s museum. Here, the fascinating Castleton story is told through a captivating collection of artefacts, allowing you to connect with the village’s deep and colourful past. The centre also features an improved retail area selling local products and souvenirs, and a dedicated space for activities and events.

The Castleton Visitor Centre is designed to make your visit seamless. For convenience, there is a Pay & Display car park and public toilets adjacent to the centre, operated by High Peak Borough Council. Please note that the parking machines only accept change and do not take bank notes or cards.

After exploring, be sure to visit the on-site Blueberry Food Café, which prides itself on using local products and suppliers, allowing you to get a genuine taste of the Peak District.

Unmissable Things to Do in and Around Castleton

Armed with maps and expert advice from the centre’s staff, you can set out to discover why Castleton is one of the Peak District’s most beloved destinations. The village is spectacularly surrounded by hillsides and overlooked by two iconic landmarks: the ancient Peveril Castle and Mam Tor, known as “the shivering mountain” due to its unstable shale slopes.

Explore a Rich Tapestry of History

  • Peveril Castle: Founded in 1086 by William Peveril, son of William the Conqueror, these imposing ruins stand guard high above the village. Climb to the top for truly breath-taking views over the Hope Valley and learn about one of England’s earliest Norman fortresses.
  • Castleton’s History: The village itself is a designated conservation area. Its history is etched into its very layout, from the folds along Back Street where animals were once penned to the oldest part of the village near Peakshole Water.

Delve into a Underground World of Wonder

Castleton is famously known for its four spectacular show caverns, each with its own unique character:

  • Treak Cliff Cavern & Blue John Cavern: Discover beautiful stalactite formations and the rare, beautiful Blue John stone, a unique form of banded fluorite found only in this area and crafted into jewellery sold in local shops.
  • Peak Cavern: Home to the largest natural cave entrance in Britain. Explore the enormous entrance cave, once home to a rope-makers’ workshop, and the vast natural cathedral within.
  • Speedwell Cavern: A truly unique experience where visitors are taken by boat along a flooded tunnel originally created by 18th-century lead miners.

Embrace the Great Outdoors

For walkers and outdoor enthusiasts, Castleton is nothing short of paradise.

  • Mam Tor: Hike to the summit of this iconic 517m hill to explore the ramparts of an ancient Iron Age hill fort and be rewarded with panoramic views across the Dark Peak and White Peak.
  • Winnats Pass: This spectacular, steep limestone gorge is one of the most dramatic natural sights in the Peak District. Owned by the National Trust, it offers a stunning route into the village.
  • Cave Dale: A dramatic dry valley that can be entered from the village near Peveril Castle. This rugged, beautiful landscape forms the start of the Limestone Way long-distance footpath.

Experience Unique Local Traditions

If your visit coincides with the 29th of May, you might witness the unique Castleton Garland Day ceremony. This ancient tradition sees a ‘King’ led through the village on horseback wearing a large, flower-covered garland, commemorating the restoration of Charles II to the throne.
