Nestled within the picturesque Mayfield Valley on the outskirts of Sheffield, Mayfield Alpacas Farm & Animal Sanctuary offers a wonderful day out for animal lovers of all ages. Set amongst peaceful countryside, this charming attraction combines hands-on animal experiences, family-friendly activities, a welcoming cafe and farm shop, creating the perfect destination for families, couples and anyone looking to escape into nature.
Originally established in 2001 by Elaine Sharp, who began breeding alpacas in 1998, Mayfield Alpacas quickly became one of the region’s most loved visitor attractions. In 2024, the business entered an exciting new chapter under new ownership, with extensive improvements across the site including landscaped grounds, new pathways, improved fencing and the complete refurbishment of the cafe, ensuring visitors can enjoy an even better experience while preserving the warm and welcoming atmosphere the farm has become known for.
Today, the sanctuary is home to over 30 friendly alpacas, alongside a wonderful collection of other animals, including llamas, Shetland ponies, pigs, goats, ducks, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens and more. As well as providing memorable visitor experiences, the sanctuary is dedicated to providing excellent care for its resident animals in a peaceful countryside setting.
Meet the Alpacas
The alpacas are undoubtedly the stars of the show. Visitors have the opportunity to get up close to these gentle, inquisitive animals while learning about their care, personalities and fascinating characteristics from the knowledgeable farm team.
The farm is home to both Huacaya and Suri alpacas, each with their own distinctive appearance. Guests can discover the differences between the breeds while enjoying a truly memorable animal encounter.
Two alpaca experiences are available throughout the year
The introductory experience offers approximately 60 or 90 minutes with the alpacas, where visitors can enter the enclosure, learn about the animals, and enjoy walking two alpacas around their field under the guidance of experienced handlers.
For those wanting a more immersive experience, the extended 90-minute session includes a more in-depth introduction to alpacas, opportunities to feed and groom them, and a longer walk around the beautiful farm. Both experiences are suitable for beginners and make a wonderful activity for couples, families and animal enthusiasts alike.
The Farm Experience
For visitors wanting to experience even more of life on the farm, the popular Farm Experience provides an unforgettable behind-the-scenes adventure.
Lasting around two hours, participants help feed, groom and care for a variety of animals, including alpacas, goats, pigs, Shetland ponies, ducks and chickens, while learning about animal welfare, farming life and daily routines from the experienced farm team.
There are plenty of opportunities to interact with the animals, capture memorable photographs and, for young visitors, even receive a Junior Alpaca Keeper Certificate to take home.
Children’s Parties
Mayfield Alpacas has become one of the area’s most popular venues close to the Peak District for children’s birthday celebrations, offering unique party experiences with a fun educational twist.
Young guests can meet and feed a variety of friendly animals, enjoy private animal encounters led by dedicated Farm Leaders and learn fascinating facts about life on the farm.
Party packages also include healthy party food, indoor play facilities, party bags and plenty of opportunities to create lasting memories with family and friends.
The Grazing Table Cafe & Farm Shop
Whether visiting the animals or simply looking for somewhere peaceful to enjoy breakfast, lunch or coffee, The Grazing Table provides a warm welcome throughout the week.
The newly refurbished cafe serves a wholesome menu inspired by seasonal ingredients, with breakfasts, lunches, homemade specials, soups, cakes and a selection of hot and cold drinks available to enjoy in a relaxed countryside setting.
Alongside the cafe, visitors can browse the farm shop, which offers locally sourced produce, artisan foods, handmade gifts, homeware and sustainable products, making it the perfect place to pick up something special before heading home.
