About The Red Lion at Litton

The Red Lion at Litton

Sitting proudly on the village green in the picturesque village of Litton, The Red Lion is a wonderfully traditional Peak District pub packed with history, character and charm. The pub dates back to 1787, when three miners' cottages were converted to create the inn that stands here today. Inside, thick exposed stone walls, wood panelling, cosy little rooms and roaring fires gives The Red Lion the warm and welcoming atmosphere of a proper country pub. Kristina, Tomas and their team have created a place that appeals to visitors and locals alike.

Exploring around The Red Lion at Litton

The Red Lion at Litton sits right in the heart of this lovely White Peak village, surrounded by the rolling fields, dry stone walls and limestone dales that characterise this part of the Peak District. It is an especially good place to include in a day spent exploring on foot, with excellent countryside beginning almost as soon as you leave the village.

Litton itself is small enough to explore at a leisurely pace. Pretty stone cottages gather around the village green, where you'll also find the old village stocks, while the community-run village shop occupies the former smithy. You can discover more about the village in our guide to Litton.

The surrounding landscape is where this location really comes into its own. Just outside the village is Cressbrook Dale National Nature Reserve, one of the beautiful limestone dales of the White Peak. Peter's Stone provides one of its most distinctive landmarks, and the network of paths through this countryside gives walkers plenty of scope for building anything from a gentle local wander to a much longer day out.

The Monsal Trail also runs close to Litton, providing another option for walking and cycling through the limestone landscape. Nearby Tideswell is worth exploring too, while Miller's Dale and the River Wye open up further possibilities for discovering this part of the National Park.

Our Peak District walks collection is a useful place to look for routes before setting out, including walks around Tideswell, Miller's Dale and neighbouring White Peak villages.

What makes The Red Lion particularly appealing from an Explore point of view is that you don't need to manufacture a day around it. Explore Litton and the surrounding dales on foot, then return to the village afterwards. It's exactly the sort of traditional Peak District pub that fits naturally into a day spent enjoying the countryside around it.
