Smallshaw Cottages & Spa is a luxurious, dog friendly, countryside retreat on the idyllic border of South Yorkshire and the Peak District, offering something for everyone, with amazing facilities. Here you’ll find four beautifully converted, award-winning period barns and a luxurious spa with fabulous facilities, available for guests and day visitors. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day out, a romantic weekend break, a family holiday or a larger group of up to 19 planning a celebration, Smallshaw Cottages provides the perfect space for everyone!

Imagine beautifully landscaped gardens, with sprawling lawns where children can play, an all-weather tennis court, a hot tub with elevated views, an amazing Finnish barbecue hut for dining under the stars – and of course a selection of onsite spa treatments!

But the magic doesn’t stop there! In the summer time Smallshaw Cottages can transform into a dream wedding venue, offering exclusive use of the cottages, gardens, lawns and facilities!

Four Luxurious Cottages

Each of the 17th Century barns at Smallshaw Cottages retain their original character with rugged oak beams and exposed stonework, while being fully equipped with modern amenities, beautifully styled to create a luxurious home-from-home stay. Each of the barns also has access to the extensive gardens, hot tub, Finnish barbecue hut, the all-weather tennis court and the wonderful onsite spa facilities!

Bramble Cottage – Sleeps 2

Bramble Cottage is a romantic retreat for 2 people, with a beautiful open plan living space, complemented by gorgeous oak beams and stonework and a fully equipped kitchen area. There’s a king-sized bedroom with plenty of storage, which is great for those wishing to stay a little while longer, and a separate bathroom with shower over.

Birch Cottage – Sleeps 4/5

Birch Cottage sleeps up to 5 people, again showcasing lots of stunning original features, oozing character and charm. The cottage benefits from stunning views surrounding Smallshaw Cottages and a wonderful wood-burning stove. However, taking centre stage is the well-equipped dining kitchen with a large oak dining table, ideal for preparing and enjoying meals together.

Birch Cottage has two bedrooms, the first a family room with a king size bed, which leads through to a smaller single room, with no window, but ideal for those needing space for an extra guest. The second room is a twin with two single beds, great for small families. The bathroom is like no other! Here you will find a bath with over shower and quirky exposed timber beams. Downstairs there is an additional walk-in wet room, so plenty of space for two couples.

Rowan Cottage – Sleeps 4/5

Rowan Cottage has the wow factor with an amazing open plan living space, with a cosy lounge and a huge fully equipped dining kitchen. A washing machine can be found in the small utility room which also has a handy downstairs wet room with power shower.

Upstairs, there are two gorgeous bedrooms, one king sized and another twin with two single beds, with plenty of storage space, again ideal for families or two couples. And a spacious bathroom with shower over bath. A put up bed can accommodate a 5th person, which fits in the king size bedroom.

The Farmhouse – Sleeps 6/7

Last but by no means least is the stunning Farmhouse. It’s charming, it’s characterful and has the most wonderful, homely feel! The Farmhouse has a large, fully equipped kitchen which leads to a gorgeous dining room with an oak dining table, complemented by oak beams, a log burner and comfy chairs. There is also a lovely sitting room with more comfy sofas, a flat screen TV and another wood-burning stove.

Upstairs a beautiful super king size room has spectacular views across to the Peak District. A further two bedrooms, one king size ensuite and one double room completes the sleeping arrangements as well as a large family bathroom. (A put up bed can accommodate a 7th person which fits into any of the bedrooms).

Explore the landscaped gardens and hidden seating areas, many of which provide elevated views of the surrounding countryside, or venture into the meadow field for a relaxing stroll. Enjoy quality family time on the extensive lawns or relax while the children play freely.

Challenge your friends to a game of tennis on the full-sized, all-weather tennis court, with breathtaking 360-degree vistas of the rolling Yorkshire countryside. (Please note, this can also be hired by day visitors to the area.)

At the end of the day, prepare a delicious feast in the Finnish Barbecue Hut, before relaxing in the inviting warmth of the outdoor Arctic hot tub, set at a blissful 39 degrees all year round. Soothing massage jets melt away tension while you gaze out at the stunning landscape, be it bathed in summer sunshine or sprinkled with winter snow. The secluded seating area with wicker furniture and a covered pod provides a private space in which to soak up the views and the uninterrupted night sky.

Elevated Countryside Location

Smallshaw Cottages and Spa has an elevated setting with uninterrupted views over the surrounding Yorkshire countryside. Just six miles away is the picture postcard town of Holmfirth, famed for the filming of the popular TV series ‘Last of the Summer Wine’. As you can imagine the area is surrounded by beautiful countryside, ideal for walkers, and is also close to The Trans Pennine Trail.

On the edge of the Peak District National Park, there are many nearby walks to traverse and pretty villages to discover. Just 20 minutes away is the pretty village of Tintwistle, and within just 30 minutes you can be in the lovely village of Bradfield, both set in beautiful Peak District moorland. Hathersage, in the heart of the Peak District can also be reached in around 45 minutes, with many more wonderful places to visit en-route such as Ladybower Reservoir. A 1 hour drive takes you to the magnificent Chatsworth House or the bustling town of Bakewell.

For those wishing to stay a little closer, there’s a great selection of shops, bars and restaurants just three miles away.
