The Old Hall Hotel, Buxton

“This is indeed a very special place with its own special feeling,” wrote Daniel Defoe in 1727 about the Old Hall Hotel in Buxton – and who are we to argue?!

Reputed to be the oldest hotel in England, the Old Hall Hotel has a rich history that dates back thousands of years.  Today it’s the epitome of luxury and comfortable style in the heart of Buxton, and it’s the perfect place to stay while enjoying this picturesque spa town and exploring the Peak District.

A little bit of history

Old_Hall_Hotel_Buxton

This ancient hotel has many tales to tell!  The present building dates back to 1573, but it was built on the foundations of an even earlier inn or hostelry.

The Old Hall Hotel as it stands today was built for the Earl and Countess of Shrewsbury, the latter being the formidable ‘Bess of Hardwick’ who was also responsible for the building of Hardwick Hall and Chatsworth House.  It was built with the sanction of Queen Elizabeth I to provide accommodation for Mary Queen of Scots, who was at that stage under house-arrest and in the custody of the Earl and Countess of Shrewsbury. Mary reputedly spent 7 summers in Buxton.

Well, these are strange times. We wonder if anyone is able to tell us when the last time the doors were closed on the oldest hotel in England? The small silver lining is the way the building looks even more stunning without a single car parked in front. We will be back, and when we are, you are all oh-so welcome. Stay safe.
