The Old Toffee Shop benefits from its enviable location in the picturesque village of Tideswell. Known as the “Cathedral of the Peak” due to its impressive parish church, Tideswell offers a charming glimpse into traditional Peak District life.
The lovely Peak District village of Tideswell has all the amenities you could wish for, some only a minute’s walk away from The Old Toffee Shop. You’ll be spoilt for choice for places to eat and drink, with four pubs and a fine dining restaurant within the village, an Italian Restaurant, plus a butcher, a baker, a general store, fish and a chip shop, tea rooms, and even a beauty salon and hair dressers! The kids will love it here too – with a playground and lots of fun things to enjoy nearby.
Tideswell’s annual food festival takes place in the village every May. It’s well worth a visit, with a huge choice of delicious, locally produced food and drink, plus other activities. If you’re visiting in June look out for Tideswell Wakes Week, held the last week in June, a much older village tradition, dating back almost 750 years. It coincides with the village’s annual Well Dressing ceremony and the church’s Festival for St John the Baptist. Then of course in the winter months, you’re only a 20 minute drive from the fabulous Christmas market at Chatsworth, making The Old Toffee Shop, perfect for all times of year.
On the outskirts of the village is the beautiful Nature Reserve of Tideswell Dale. This is a lovely, sheltered limestone gorge, part of the Wye Valley Site of Special Scientific Interest, designated for its geology and distinctive grasslands and woodlands. It is home to many species of wild flowers and butterflies, including small heath and common blue. A little further and you’ll walk into the stunning Cressbrook Dale and Miller’s Dale, plus the traffic-free Monsal Trail is close by too, perfect for cycling.
The pretty village of Litton is only a quick stroll away down a country lane. It has another gorgeous village pub with seating overlooking the village green, and a shop/tearoom owned and run by local residents.
A short drive takes you to the delightful spa town of Buxton, with its graceful Georgian architecture and famous Opera House, or to other favourite Peak District destinations such as Castleton, Bakewell, Eyam, Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall.
