The Walking Specialists Since 1993 – Your Peak District experts!
Foothills, established in 1993, has grown into one of the UK’s most trusted independent outdoor specialists — a welcoming hub for walkers, adventurers, and families who love exploring the hills. Conveniently located in Sheffield, just a few miles from the edge of the Peak District National Park, it’s the perfect place to stop before or after a day in the countryside. Visitors are always greeted with friendly expertise… and free coffee on tap!
What makes Foothills truly stand out is the team behind it. With over 75 years of combined experience among their senior staff, customers benefit from genuine, practical outdoor knowledge. Their advice is rooted in real experience, ensuring every visitor finds the right gear for their needs — whether they’re tackling a gentle valley walk or a long-distance trek.

Foothills is particularly renowned for its specialist boot-fitting service. Stocking an impressive range of sizes, men’s from 6 to 19 and women’s from 3 to 10, they take time to ensure maximum comfort, support, and suitability for your adventures. It’s a key reason they encourage customers to shop in-store rather than online; some equipment simply needs expert guidance and a proper fit.
Their shelves are filled with everything an outdoor enthusiast could possibly need. Clothing ranges from high-quality baselayers, fleeces, headwear, waterproofs, and coats to technical outdoor apparel from brands such as Rohan, Paramo, Odlo, Silverpoint and more. They also stock footwear, rucksacks from Lowe Alpine, Gregory and Rab, outdoor accessories, maps, and plenty of aftercare and repair products to keep your kit performing at its best. Add to that one of the best selections of Leki walking poles in the region, and you truly have everything under one roof.
Despite offering such an extensive range, Foothills remains warm, personal, and deeply rooted in its original ethos: to provide honest advice, reliable equipment, and friendly service for all.

Each Wednesday, Foothills run a free Guided Walk from various locations around the Peak District. These routes, usually 5–7 miles, cover mixed terrain and are written by Day Walks in the Peak District author Norman Taylor. They’re a firm favourite among locals and visitors alike — a brilliant way to explore new areas, meet fellow walkers, and enjoy the Peaks at a relaxed pace.
If you’d like to join a walk and haven’t been before, simply pop into the shop and they’ll get you signed up.
