This charming 17th century shop, deli and restaurant is now a haven for all things delicious. Whilst dogs aren’t allowed in the shop and restaurant, they are more than welcome in both the outside courtyard and inside the warm deli area on the ground floor.

Bakewell Pudding or Bakewell Tart??

Let’s answer that all important question!
What’s the difference between a Bakewell Pudding and a Bakewell Tart?

The Bakewell Pudding originated in this very shop back in the 1800s when a local cook misunderstood a recipe for a strawberry tart and ended up topping it with soft set almond custard, the recipe still used today! The ‘’pudding’’ has a buttery puff pastry case, coated with a layer of strawberry jam and topped with set custard made with eggs, sugar and almonds.

The ‘’tart’’ was then created later in the 20th Century as a variation with sweet shortcrust pastry, layered with strawberry jam and finished with a fluffy sponge filling of eggs, almonds and sugar, topped with icing and that all important glazed cherry – often referred to as a ‘’Cherry Bakewell’’.

So, while both the pudding and the tart are quite different, they can both be enjoyed at The Original Bakewell Pudding Shop, in fact, with an extra twist because here they offer a variety of iced toppings including lemon and chocolate!

With pre-booking required at least two weeks in advance for groups of 15 or more, this fun-filled activity allows you to assemble your very own Bakewell Pudding in their test bakery. Choose from a morning session with coffee and a breakfast sandwich, or a mid-morning or afternoon session with a delicious afternoon tea. The evening option adds a competitive twist with prizes for the best (and worst!) creations, all enjoyed in the privacy of the entire shop with a two-course meal and drinks.

Delightful Market Town of Bakewell

Bakewell is often referred to as the ancient capital of the Peak District, attracting returning visitors time and time again to browse the independent shops and restaurants, and historic buildings, one of which is The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop!

It’s not just about the shops though, this pretty town has old stone cottages, narrow lanes and hidden courtyards with the tranquil River Wye running through it, the ideal place to relax and people-watch with fish and chips or a piece of cake.

The weekly market is a must-see day out, taking place every Monday from early in the morning, with over 160 stall holders lining the main street. There are also various annual events, such as the Bakewell Carnival and the Bakewell Agricultural Show, held every August, regarded as one of the largest agricultural shows in the UK!

Magnificent Chatsworth House is just a ten-minute drive from Bakewell, and Haddon Hall just five minutes away, so you can easily make a day of your visit, taking in the many nearby villages such as Ashford-in-the-Water, Baslow and Monyash, all of which are less than 10 minutes away.

For those who enjoy walking, Bakewell is surrounded by the most beautiful countryside with so many routes just waiting for you to explore, and the nearby Monsal Trail provides an 8.5 mile traffic-free route ideal for both walkers and cyclists.
