Historic Eyam & Countryside Walks

Eyam itself is aptly delightful! This wonderful village attracts visitors to the Peak District year after year, due to its fascinating history and stunning surrounding countryside.

Back in the 1600s Eyam was the site of an outbreak of the bubonic plague, so the locals decided to quarantine themselves from the rest of the world for 14 months, meaning that nobody could leave or enter the village during that time. One of the Boundary Stones, where food and medicines were left for the residents, can still be seen today, as can many more of the fascinating historic features of this wonderful village, providing for a really interesting day out, which is obviously even more intriguing since our own recent quarantines!

Today, Eyam is a beautiful village where the narrow streets are lined with pretty cottages and impressive houses, many with spectacular gardens which are open to the public in the summer on a prestigious garden open day. Not forgetting Eyam Hall, which is open to the public for tours, and Eyam Museum, which tells the story of this unique village. Eyam also a small selection of shops, cafes and tea rooms, plus a wonderful village pub, so there’s plenty to fill your day here.

Eyam is surrounded by beautiful countryside and numerous picturesque walks. Perhaps take a stroll over to nearby Foolow with its pretty village pond, or to Bretton with far reaching views. Another popular walk is the 5.5 mile circular route to Stoney Middleton, another historic and pretty village.
