Heights of Abraham is famous for its cable cars, which take visitors on an exciting flight through the scenic Derwent Valley, passing over river, road and rail before reaching the summit of Masson Hill. Once at the summit the 239-year story of the Heights springs to life. Visitors can take two different tours through underground illuminated caverns, with professional guides to lead the way.
Above ground, there are exhibitions to discover, delving deeper into the heritage of the 60-acre estate. Relax in the Vista restaurant with an outstanding view to accompany your meal. Adventure playgrounds are on offer to keep the children busy, with heritage gardens and sculptures too. The Heights is a truly unique and memorable day out.

The Famous Cable Cars
Begin your day at the Heights of Abraham by taking a flight in one of the famous cable cars. Travel across the picturesque Derwent Valley in style and enjoy the views of Matlock Bath below. The journey takes you over 554ft upwards to the summit, 1000ft above sea level.
It’s not just the views from the cable car, there’s a new view around every corner once you reach the summit. Experience the Peak District surrounding this special hilltop estate, with views of peaks and valleys everywhere you look.
The Fabulous Show Caverns
Take a tour underground in Height of Abraham’s two famous show caverns. Follow one of the professional cavern guides deep into the hillside and learn tales of mining, history, geology, and tourism from those who know it best. Take a Victorian Style tour at the Great Rutland Cavern and learn of tales of miners past. Enjoy an immersive underground sound and light show at the Great Masson Cavern. After that, take a stroll across the landscaped gardens that portray both the dark and light Peak District to the film theatre to learn more about the formation of the caverns and enjoy an exciting short film about the construction of the cable cars, back in 1984.
Heritage Buildings & Exhibitions
Climb the spiral staircase of the Victoria Prospect Tower, built in 1844, and admire the 360-degree view from the top. The summerhouse, built in 1810, is the oldest building on the estate and is where Victorians would have stopped t rest on their walk up to the summit. The Long View exhibition delves deeper into the Heights’ long history, from opening in 1787 as a pleasure garden for Georgian tourists, to the modern Heights of Abraham visitors see today.
Dine at the Heights
The Vista Restaurant and Terrace Café at the Heights of Abraham are almost 1000ft above sea level. The exclusive Vista balcony gives views for miles across the valley, a great place to soak up the surroundings while enjoying a freshly made meal, accompanied by a local ale or gin. Or take a light lunch with friends in the downstairs café, with far-reaching views to enjoy with a hot drink and a delicious cake.
Meet The Wombles
Visitors can even meet The Wombles at weekends during school holidays at The Wombles Meet & Greet area, with an interactive children’s trail, and a walk-through exhibition telling the story of The Wombles from their creation in the 1960s through to their modern-day antics on Youtube!
The Summit: Woodland Walks, Adventure Playgrounds, Open Space Ideal For Picnicking
Enjoy the wide-open space and relaxing atmosphere of the summit. Feel the Derbyshire air fill your lungs as you breathe the spectacular scenery in. Walk the woodland paths and heritage trails of those from the past, with the first trees of the pleasure garden planted in the 18th Century. The adventure playgrounds also provide a welcome space for children to let off steam, with picnic benches nearby.
Access to everything at the Heights estate is included in the cable car ticket, giving you entry to fascinating exhibitions, historic buildings, spectacular viewpoints and more. Entry to all seasonal events is also granted.
Ticket Prices
Advanced booking is strongly recommended. Online tickets are £27 per adult and £16 per child. Under 4’s go free. Carers to disabled guests are admitted at 50% off, with discounts on offer for Blue Light Card holders and MOD.
Annual passes are also on sale for unlimited visits throughout the year.
