Mount Cook is a not-for-profit outdoor adventure centre based on the outskirts of the Peak District, whose aim is to make a difference to people’s lives through direct outdoor experiences. The modern, spacious facilities offer group stays with full board accommodation for up to 140 people, making it ideal for a variety of groups from schools, universities or businesses, as well as for religious retreats or even weddings!
The highly trained team of staff will look after you from the moment you enquire until the moment you leave, giving you and your group the opportunity to try a huge range of activities designed to make memories and develop key skills through hands-on outdoor learning on their 9 acre site and nearby outdoor activity centres.Â
Mount Cook are dedicated to engaging young minds with the great outdoors, expanding each pupil’s appetite for learning and encouraging curiosity. Their residential trips are available 12 months of the year and help to enhance relationships between pupils and their teachers, and business colleagues, whilst increasing motivation, self-confidence and engagement.
Schools – Whether you’re looking for new learning opportunities for your primary school students, a confidence building trip for your Year 7s, or an exam preparation retreat for your Year 11s, Mount Cook has the facilities to create your perfect trip.
Universities – Mount Cook work with further learning providers to support students during their academic journey, creating custom designed programmes to complement their courses. Using the indoor and outdoor environment, their programmes deliver a range of learning experiences which are highly memorable with motivational positive outcomes.
Apprentices – The Apprentice Programmes at Mount Cook deliver a mix of new experiences and adventurous activities which develop the personal skills required for effective employees.
Corporate Groups – If you’re a business looking to increase morale or boost team building, Mount Cook provide action-packed events with plenty of dynamic activities, all of which will be hugely beneficial to your workforce.
You don’t need to worry about a thing during your stay at Mount Cook – they have everything covered! They have 35 ensuite bedrooms with 4 beds in each, sleeping up to 140 people in the main building, so plenty of space for everyone without the rooms being overcrowded. They also have 2 accessible bedrooms for those with restricted mobility.Â
In addition, available from March to October, there are 10 Glamping Pods with 4 beds in each, sleeping a total of 40 extra people.
Each of the rooms has key card access to give you easy and private access to your own rooms.
All bedding is provided.
Mount Cook serve up a range of nutritious, home-cooked meals throughout the day, so that you’ll have hearty meals to return to after your day of adventures, which can be enjoyed in the spacious, modern restaurant.
Each morning guests can enjoy a cooked breakfast with sausages or bacon, hash browns, eggs and beans, as well as croissants, fresh fruit, cereal yoghurt and toast, so there’s always something for everyone to fuel the day ahead.
The lunchtime menu usually consists of delicious favourites like pasta, jacket potatoes, filled rolls, followed by fresh fruit and a sweet treat, so your pupils will have full tummies and will be ready to continue with the next adventure.
Finally, in the evening, guests can round off the day indulging in more firm favourites such as pizza, Cumberland sausage, fish and chips or bolognaise. There is always a vegetarian option available. All these tasty dishes are then followed by a delicious dessert such as sticky toffee pudding and custard. The kids and adults alike will love the food here!
For the adult groups, you’ll be pleased to hear there’s a well stocked bar at Mount Cook with a great selection of lagers, wines, ales, spirits and soft drinks.
There are several indoor spaces available to book. All spaces can be set up with a screen and projector for those who wish to combine the Mount Cook experiences with their own business training or presentations too.
Small Hall – Comfortable conferencing space with basic AV equipment for up to 30 people.
Main Dining Hall – The largest indoor space for up to 120 people.
The Tipi – Available from March – October for up to 35 people.
There’s a HUGE range of activities to enjoy as part of your learning experience at Mount Cook for all fitness levels and ages. Each activity is chosen based on the skill you wish to develop. Offsite activities are provided locally by experienced activity providers Acclimbatize.

The Mount Cook Challenge
Mount Cook is located in an area of outstanding beauty, set in 9 acres of grounds, with plenty of outdoor space, communal areas and accommodation for up to 180 guests, providing the most amazing place to host large group events from business trips, faith groups or even weddings, where there’s room for all guests to stay over!
With full board catering, a licensed bar, a gorgeous glass-fronted room for 140 guests, and acres of outdoor space, there is so much flexibility here for you to have the perfect conference or the most memorable wedding. There are activities to entertain families of all ages, so you could ditch the usual wedding favours and invite your wedding party to have go on the zip wire instead! Mount Cook will make your day easy and simple, whilst still retaining all the flexibility that you need to make your day completely about you.
The peaceful rural location is ideal for private retreats too, with large spaces for everyone and smaller spaces for quieter talks and meetings.
Why not make a weekend of it with Friday evening to Sunday morning hire available, with accommodation for all your friends and family included?! Weekend breaks are available throughout the year, and longer retreats over the summer holidays and winter.
Mount Cook is located just outside the Peak District National Park, in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside between Matlock and Carsington Water, making it the perfect base to enjoy many outdoor activities.
In addition to the huge selection of onsite activities, due to the close proximity to Carsington Water Mount Cook can also provide water sport experiences such as raft building and canoeing. They’re also just a five-minute walk from Black Rocks, a famous climbing area, where groups are able to push their boundaries and learn new skills on a real rock face.Â
Of course, being on the outskirts of the Peak District National Park, there are endless walking opportunities too. Some guests have never experienced the health benefits of spending time in the countryside and Mount Cook take great pleasure in introducing visitors to the breathtaking landscape that surrounds them, whilst teaching them about the flora and fauna along the way.
Finally, Mount Cook are around 30 minutes from magnificent Chatsworth House and the exhilarating Alton Towers Resort – great for those who’d like to include an extra day out to their itinerary!
