Ashford-in-the-Water is the most charming little village with narrow streets, lined with pretty limestone cottages with well-tended gardens, and ducks waddling along the grassy riverbanks, dotted with daffodils in the spring and draping willow trees providing dappled shade in the summer. The picturesque sheepwash bridge attracts visitors year upon year, while the tranquil River Wye that runs beneath it attracts dippers and rainbow trout.
Visitors can enjoy a leisurely 1.5 mile stroll along the riverbank to the popular market town of Bakewell, where you can browse independent shops, treat yourself to a traditional Bakewell Pudding, or sample the delights at other tempting bars and eateries. Why not try this 6 mile walk, starting in Bakewell, stopping off at The Ashford Arms at your half way point, before returning back to Bakewell along the nearby Monsal Trail?
Ashford-in-the-Water and The Ashford Arms are just half a mile from the Monsal Trail and well worth the short detour if you are en-route from Bakewell to Chee Dale near Buxton. This 8.5 mile, traffic free route is great for both cyclists and walkers alike, venturing through lit tunnels, miles of beautiful countryside and over the impressive Headstone Viaduct with the most amazing elevated views from Monsal Head.
Haddon Hall, regarded as one of the most beautiful medieval manor houses in England, is a hidden gem just four miles from The Ashford Arms, and is a must for visitors to the Peak District. Visitors can explore the splendid rooms and glorious gardens where the historic walls are adorned with fragrant roses, and attend seasonal artisan markets throughout the year. Of course, no visit to the Peak District would be complete without also visiting the jewel in the Peak District’s crown, Chatsworth House, which is just five miles from The Ashford Arms. Children will have a great time at Chatsworth’s Farm Park and Playground, and the whole family will enjoy spotting deer in the huge parklands, and embarking on a journey through impressive history and architecture before browsing the landscaped gardens.
