The village of Birchover is an historic gem, with so much to discover. Surrounded by miles of breathtaking countryside, there are beautiful walks right from the door, or you can just admire the views from Rocking Stone Cottages‘ pretty terraces whilst relaxing in the sunshine. From the garden you can admire 2 pairs of resident buzzards and a tawny owl. Don’t miss exploring the mysterious Rowtor Rocks on the edge of the village though, a wonderful system of caves, carvings and lookout points created in the 17th Century by the village parson, or the peaceful expanse of Stanton Moor, clad in heather and bilberries in the summer months, where you’ll find the Nine Ladies Stone Circle. Another popular walk for all ages in this area takes you to Robin Hood’s Stride, a collection of rock formations that offer spectacular views over the surrounding landscape.
Birchover is just 5 miles from the lovely town of Matlock, with its cafés, independent shops and a boating lake, and also close to the inland ‘seaside town’ of Matlock Bath, with its vibrant arcades and wealth of visitor attractions.
For those who prefer to browse picturesque gardens and stately homes, you’ll be spoilt for choice, with the beautiful medieval manor house of Haddon Hall just three miles away, and slightly further the magnificent Chatsworth House with its fabulous deer park.
There are many pretty villages nearby too, each with their own charm and more footpaths to traverse, such as Youlgreave, Stanton in Peak and Winster.
