One of the most impressive reasons to choose Ladywash Cottage is its truly wonderful location, which serves as the perfect base for exploring the very best of the Peak District. Situated high above the Hope Valley, at the crossroads of the Dark Peak, White Peak and High Peak, Ladywash Cottage is ideally located for relaxing walks, challenging hikes, or visits to the pretty villages and bustling market towns.
Right on your doorstep is the world-famous village of Eyam. Known historically as the “Plague Village,” Eyam’s incredible story of voluntary quarantine in the 17th century is both moving and fascinating. Visitors to Eyam can explore the Eyam Museum, see the famous Plague Cottages, as well as enjoy delightful eateries and courtyard shops.

For lovers of the great outdoors, the hiking, running, cycling, and climbing opportunities are quite literally on your doorstep. The challenging gritstone edges of the Dark Peak, such as Froggatt and Curbar Edge, are easily accessible for exhilarating climbs and walks, offering spectacular views that stretch for miles. Cyclists can join the famous Monsal Trail, a traffic-free route that follows an old railway line through spectacular limestone dales, perfect for a gentle family ride or a more energetic workout. For the serious walker, Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peak District, and Mam Tor (the ‘Shivering Mountain’) near Castleton, are within easy striking distance from Ladywash Cottage too.

A short, scenic drive will lead you to some of the Peak District’s most beloved towns and villages. The charming market town of Bakewell, famous for its delicious Bakewell Pudding and bustling riverside setting, is a must-visit for its independent shops and riverside walks. To the west lies Castleton, a picturesque village nestled beneath the imposing ruins of Peveril Castle, offering access to the remarkable show caves, including Peak Cavern, and the geological marvels of Winnat’s Pass. Further into the valleys, villages like Hathersage offer a heated open-air swimming pool with an abundance of shops and eateries, while quiet, idyllic spots like Ashford-in-the-Water and Foolow provide perfect photo opportunities with their traditional stone cottages and village greens.
No trip to the area around Ladywash Cottage is complete without visiting the Peak District’s two most iconic stately homes. Chatsworth House offers spectacular gardens, a farmyard, a deer park and various shows and markets throughout the year. Nearby, the medieval splendour of Haddon Hall is renowned for its romantic beauty and stunning grounds.
